Global Goals
At Stopsley, we aim for our children to become #changemakers who are empowered to make a difference to their own lives, to their community and to their world, both now and in the future. To ensure that our school curriculum meets that aim, we link our learning to the 'Global Goals'.
The Global Goals (also known as the Goals for Sustainable Development) were devised by the United Nations. They consist of 17 individual goals with three main outcomes in mind, to be achieved by 2030.
These outcomes are:
- To end extreme global poverty
- To reduce inequality and injustice
- To tackle climate change
All of our topics, in each year group, link to one of the Global Goals. As part of their learning, the children research that goal and find out why it has been chosen as a goal and how it impacts them. Children are encouraged to identify a direct connection between the goal and their lives at home and they learn about the impact the goal has nationally and across the world. We encourage problem-solving and meaningful action of the children, by asking them: what can we do ourselves towards achieving the goal? How will we do it? How will our changes affect us locally? Who can we contact locally to help us make an impact? How are we going to lead on it? How are we going to share what we have done and use it to make an impact locally / globally? Our #changemakers projects empower the children to make this impact.
We want our children to believe they have the 'power to make a difference for themselves and others'. By connecting learning to activities that help our children contribute to the Global Goals, their experience helps build this belief in themselves. They can see that their actions are valued and matter and this supports us to achieve our school vision as well as achieve the aims set out in the National Curriculum: “The curriculum itself cannot remain static. It must be responsive to changes in society and the economy. Teachers, have to reappraise their teaching in response to the changing needs of their pupils and the impact of economic, social and cultural change.”
The videos below explain the Global Goals and the impact the work done towards achieving them has already had on our world.
