Governor Role
As Governors, a critical part of our role is to ensure we develop and maintain strong links with parents, staff and pupils. To support this, we can often be found in and around school, attending meetings and experiencing the different activities that take place in school. We also try to attend as many school functions as we are able.
The role of Governor is carried out on a voluntary basis. As a Governor, you can:
-
Gain experience in strategic and financial planning.
-
Learn to set aims and objectives to reach your goals.
-
Work within a team and learn how to debate and challenge in a supportive way.

You don't need to be an experienced professional - it's about attitude as well as expertise. The Governing Body needs skilled people to help them run effectively, but hard and soft skills are needed around the table, such as, problem-solving or negotiation as much as specific expertise.

There are a number of key documents which new Governors should familiarise themselves with to help them understand their role and be effective and compliant in governance. These documents are updated on a regular basis and governors should ensure they read the most up-to-date version available. New governors should take care not to overwhelm themselves with reading too much information too quickly. Please click on the links below for further information.

Competency Framework for Governance
Keeping Children Safe in Education
Statutory guidance for all school leaders which should be given full regard when carrying out child protection and safeguarding duties. All staff and governors should read part one as a minimum, but it is recommended that all governors read and refer to the whole guidance to ensure compliance and to commit due regard to the board’s safeguarding responsibilities.
